CANON INFORMATION
CHARACTER NAME: Katie Holt
CANON: Voltron: Legendary Defender
HISTORY: Pidge's page on the VLD wiki.
STRENGTHS: ✓ intelligence; especially when it comes to technology, be it alien or anything else, she works diligently to work through problems and solve them, if she can. she does math for fun, runs calculations and the like just for the hell of it, and will actively engage in any sort of conversation that will see her being able to explain something, especially if it's science-related.
✓ tenacity; there is no such thing as a problem she can't solve, no matter what it is that ends up standing in front of her. there is no taking the easy way out, either, not just because it's cheating but because there's no fun in it that way, and she often sees the challenging aspects of an issue as the most rewarding to endure.
✓ loyalty; she will go above and beyond to do whatever is necessary for her friends, if the need arises. she doesn't make friends easily, being something of an introvert and on the quiet side, but once you get to know her, earn her trust, you've got a friend for life, to be sure.
FLAWS: ✕ she's got a bit of a temper; sometimes it takes a lot to rile her up, and sometimes it doesn't take much at all, but when that temper flares, you will absolutely know it. she's not the kind of person that will quietly seethe until whatever it is blows over — nope, it explodes like a supernova, and tends to leave a bit of chaos in its wake until it dies down again.
✕ introvert; putting it mildly, to be sure, pidge is a very, very private person and would prefer to keep a lot of the personal aspects of her life as just that. private. she's not exactly shy by any means but it takes a while for her to open up to people even when they want to be the ones to let her in, to get close to her in turn, and it just comes from being a naturally closed-off individual.
✕ a little bit cocky; she knows she's smart, and is more than confident in her abilities when it comes to things she's well-versed in. it isn't unfounded in the least, that's for sure, but she does have a tendency to toot her own horn when given an opportunity, or remind someone of how intelligent she is. this means that she sometimes finds difficulty working with others if she thinks they aren't all on the same level.
CANON ABILITIES: She's human, no canon supernatural abilities but she does have a particular set of skills that make her useful in a myriad ways.
+ pilot of the Green Lion, which is pretty cool when you think about being able to drive a giant robot cat around space
+ hacker extraordinaire, with the ability to pick up on even alien tech rather quickly
+ incredibly intelligent in general, coming from a nerdy family background
+ good in hand-to-hand combat, close-quarters, that sort of thing; possibly due to her small size and both speed and agility
AU INFORMATION
AU CHARACTER NAME: Katie Holt, but she'll be trying to pass as Pidge Gunderson at the Academy
AGE: 16
GRADE: 10
AU BACKSTORY: Generally speaking, Pidge's life up to a certain Series of Events ( ™ ) was pretty low-key normal; the Holts are a pretty well-known research for the Garrison, her father Sam and older brother Matt being the ones with the most prominent involvement, providing whatever information they can when they gather it to help with things like armor upgrades, etc. Whatever knowledge they have, they hand it over, just in the hopes that it will end up being helpful in some way or another.
Pidge aspires to join the Garrison when she's old enough, to follow in her father and brother's footsteps and use that large brain of hers in any way she can. A true support class. On top of that, her Flame manifests in her early teens, bringing about a sensitivity to nature that puts her more in tune with it than she would have ever thought. Or wanted, really, but. Moving right along.
When she's fifteen, Sam and Matt are volunteered to go on an expedition to gather more information on the Outlands — and both of them go missing as a result. Disappear into thin air, as it were, and of course that leaves both Pidge and her mother Colleen as distraught as they've ever been. The Garrison says they've been lost for good, and of course, the youngest Holt doesn't believe that for a second.
Which means it isn't long before she runs away from home to search for them herself, having been practicing the same runic inscription abilities her father and brother are possessed of; her ultimate goal is Daybreak Academy to better hone those skills, to make them and herself more useful but she might ( read: definitely ) take a short detour to go in search of her missing family for herself.
And that might ( read: definitely ) mean a very grainy photo of her ends up on some conspiracy website with the tagline ( please insert name of preferred cryptid here ) claims another victim! But that's not all that important, is it? Nah.
What happens thereafter is the decision to check out the Academy, but she isn't about to go in there looking like herself — because she ran away from home, remember, and her mother would come to collect her in a heartbeat if she found out what she'd done — so. She cuts off her hair and puts on a pair of glasses that used to belong to Matt, and presents herself as Pidge Gunderson, a boy eager to learn and very, very quick on the uptake.
Because no one is going to take her seriously as a girl, or something. She's convinced. Also, secret identity? Yes.
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: Generally, I think her core personality is going to remain much the same as it does in her original canon; she's still going to be very driven, very detail-oriented when it comes to learning new things and still incredibly hell-bent on finding her father and brother and bringing them back home.
Though, I do think that their disappearance is even more of a reason for her to learn everything she can about their craft, just so she'll be able to join up with the Garrison and follow their lead, so she can make them proud in their absence and be able to tell them that she was the one that figured out how to bring them home.
She will be a bit more secretive, too, if that's at all possible; wanting to keep her real identity under wraps is at the top of her list of priorities, because her family's name is well-known with the Guard and she absolutely does not want word getting around that her parents' only daughter is skulking around, attempting to gain information / knowledge / training for her own personal use.
Which is kind of what she's trying to do, but no one needs to know that, do they? Nope.
RACE: Human
SECRET SOCIETY: Her father and brother are both members of the Rune Guard — more specifically, the Garrison — and she has been training from a very young age to learn the same sort of runic inscription they're both adept in. She's also a Candle that is still attempting to figure out the full span of her powers, and that might take a while.
POWERS: Originally manifesting as a sensitivity to nature, not quite putting her at one with it or anything like that, but she's definitely more in tune with it than your normal, average human being; she can tap into what a living thing is feeling, whether it's a tree or a flower or what have you, a sort of empathy that really isn't seen anywhere else. Maybe she can learn to make things grow. Maybe she can tell you when it's going to rain before the sky even gets dark, but mostly her power lies with her knowledge of runes and what she can make with them, whether it's enchanting armor like her dad and brother or making something else all on her own, her brain is the greatest source of her power, and she intends to hone it as best she can.
HOUSING: No preference!
INTERVIEW SAMPLE PROMPT
1. WHAT DO YOU MOST DESIRE FOR YOUR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE?
( she doesn't even hesitate to answer this. ) To learn as much as I can, without anything else getting in the way. Education is important, and it should come first.
2. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE IN THE FUTURE?
To make something really spectacular. Like, something I've come up with all on my own, something so great that no matter what it is, no one will ever forget it. Something that will help make lives easier, or … I dunno, just something no one else has thought of yet.
4. WHAT IS ESSENTIAL FOR A SCHOOL TO OFFER TO ITS STUDENTS?
( there's a little bit of hesitation on this one. ) Variety, I guess? Options. Options are always good, especially for those of us that happen to have interests in a couple of different things. Who says we won't want to focus on more than one area of study?
5. WHAT DO YOU FEEL MOST LIMITS YOU FROM ACHIEVING YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL?
Not being challenged enough. Anything worth achieving is worth working as hard as you can for it, and if everything's made easy, what's the point? You can't grow that way, as a person or an intellectual.
6. WHAT COURSE WORK EXCITES YOU? WHY?
Anything that's hands-on. Anything that lets me tinker while I'm learning — because it's easy enough to read chapters in a book, but putting theory into practical application? That's where the excitement is.
7. WHAT COURSE WORK DO YOU DETEST MOST? WHY?
I wouldn't say there's anything that I really detest? That's a really strong word. ( but she's going to think about it for a second. ) Music, I guess. I'm pretty bad at it.
9. WHEN GIVEN FREE TIME, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT?
Oh, you know, the usual. Play video games. Read. Help my dad or brother with whatever they're working on, even if they don't really need my help. It's a good way to keep learning.
Crappy TV shows are fun, too.
10. WHEN UNDER PRESSURE OF A TIGHT DEADLINE, HOW DO YOU RESPOND?
Drink a pot of coffee and pull an all-nighter. Or a couple of them, depending on how boned I am for time. Stress, focus, rinse and repeat. I've never missed a deadline.
11. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR PEERS?
Constructive criticism. That actually makes sense. If you're just gonna point out some flaw in something I've done without offering ways of fixing it, then you're really just blowing smoke, aren't you? Be informative. It's more helpful than you think.
12. WHEN WORKING IN A GROUP, HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE TO ACHIEVE YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL?
For the group as a whole to know how to work together from the start. If there's bickering, or any kind of disagreements that can't be worked out in a reasonable amount of time, it's useless.
13. DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN RELY ON YOUR PEERS, OR DO YOU FEEL YOU MUST EXCEL ON YOUR OWN?
That … really kind of depends. If I've known them for a while, know how they work and how they get things done, then yeah. I can rely on them. A little. But I really would rather think that my success is my own, instead of being helped along by someone else. Not that there's anything wrong with getting help! That's just … not me, I guess.
